Squawk severities
What it is
Section titled “What it is”A squawk is a reported defect or discrepancy against an asset (anything from “low oil pressure” to “sun visor broken”). Every squawk carries a severity, chosen by the reporter and correctable by an admin until the squawk is closed. Severity decides how the squawk affects booking availability. A selected severity does not certify safety or permission to fly.
Syndik8 has three severities:
- Grounding: restricts booking availability while open.
- Caution: warning. Does not itself restrict bookings.
- Info: informational note. No impact on availability.
Who can use it
Section titled “Who can use it”- Any member can report a squawk and choose its severity. Members cannot change it afterwards, including on squawks they reported.
- Admins can change the severity while the squawk is pending, open or deferred: during squawk approval, where the Confirm squawk dialog lets them pick the severity before confirming, or at any time with Change severity on the squawk’s detail screen. See Change a squawk’s severity.
Where to find it
Section titled “Where to find it”- Asset detail → Squawks → Report squawk.
- Route:
/syndicates/:syndicateId/assets/:assetId/squawks/report. - The report form presents the three levels as a segmented control, in the order Grounding, Caution, Info. Nothing is selected to begin with, and a single description box below the control explains whichever level you pick — there is no description until you pick one, and never three at once. Submitting without a choice marks the control Select a severity level.

In-app descriptions shown under each level on the report form
Section titled “In-app descriptions shown under each level on the report form”- Grounding: “Grounds the aircraft. Bookings are blocked until this squawk is resolved.” Shown in red with a warning icon.
- Caution: “Issue that should be addressed soon. Asset can still be used with caution.”
- Info: “An informational note. No impact on asset usage or safety.”
Each description appears in one box coloured for its level: red for Grounding, amber for Caution, blue for Info.
Behaviour rules
Section titled “Behaviour rules”- An open grounding squawk grounds the asset. By default a reported grounding squawk opens, and grounds, immediately; where the syndicate requires confirmation, a member’s squawk stays pending and does not ground until an admin confirms it. See squawk statuses for the lifecycle.
- Recording a lawful deferral clears this booking restriction. When an admin defers a grounding squawk, the asset becomes available again until the deferral date and its suspended bookings are restored, except any that still overlap an active maintenance window. This is guarded: booking availability only returns if no recorded grounding cause remains, that is, no other open grounding squawk and no overdue maintenance item.
- An admin can correct the severity until the squawk is closed. On a pending squawk the change is free, and the Confirm squawk dialog offers it as part of approving the report, pre-selected with the severity the member chose. On an open or deferred squawk the change is made with Change severity on the detail screen. Once a squawk is resolved or dismissed, its severity stays as it was.
- Lowering a grounding squawk that is open or deferred needs a reason. The dialog says so as soon as you pick the lower severity, and the change is refused without one. Lowering an open grounding squawk clears its booking restriction, and the bookings its grounding suspended are reinstated, as long as nothing else grounds it (another open grounding squawk or an overdue maintenance item). Members are told the asset is back in service.
- Raising a squawk to grounding grounds the asset straight away when the squawk is open (or is being confirmed), exactly as reporting a grounding squawk does: members are told, and future bookings suspend. Raising a pending squawk without confirming it grounds nothing until it is confirmed.
- The last severity change is on the squawk’s record. The detail screen shows Severity changed from the old severity to the new one, by the admin, with the date and time and the reason if one was given. Everyone who can open the squawk sees it, including the member who reported it. Who, when and the old severity are recorded by the server, not the app.
- Caution and info squawks do not affect bookings at all. They are visible on the asset for situational awareness but do not trigger any blocks.
- When the deferral date passes, the asset is grounded again. The suspended bookings re-suspend automatically, unless the squawk was resolved before the expiry date. Admins receive a reminder on the expiry day and when a linked repair booking finishes. See Airworthiness rules.
