Change a squawk's severity

Members choose a severity when they report a squawk, and someone new to the aircraft can get it wrong: a stiff trim wheel reported as Grounding, or a cracked exhaust reported as Info. As an admin you can put the severity right at any point until the squawk is resolved or dismissed.

If the squawk is still waiting for approval, you can also correct the severity as part of confirming it. See Confirm or dismiss a reported squawk.

  • You must be an admin. Members cannot change a squawk’s severity, including on squawks they reported.
  • The squawk must be pending, open or deferred. A resolved or dismissed squawk keeps the severity it closed with.
  • If you are lowering a Grounding squawk that is open or deferred, have the reason ready. It is required, because lowering it puts the aircraft back in service.
  1. Open the squawk’s detail screen (from the asset’s squawk list, or View Detail on the pending queue).
  2. Under Admin Actions, tap Change severity. The dialog shows the squawk’s current severity with it selected.
  3. Tap the severity the squawk should have: Grounding, Caution or Info. Save severity stays greyed out until you pick a different one.
  4. A Reason box appears. Under it the dialog tells you whether a reason is needed:
    • Required when you lower a grounding squawk that is open or deferred. The squawk grounded the aircraft, and the record has to say why that was wrong.
    • Optional for any other change. Whatever you write is still kept on the squawk’s record.
  5. If you picked Grounding for an open squawk, the dialog warns that it takes the aircraft out of service and suspends its bookings straight away.
  6. Tap Save severity. Cancel closes the dialog and changes nothing.

You see Severity changed. The squawk keeps its status; only the severity moves.

  • Lowered from grounding (open squawk): the aircraft goes back in service and the bookings its grounding suspended are reinstated, as long as nothing else grounds it (another open grounding squawk, or an overdue maintenance check). Members get the usual Back in Service notification.
  • Lowered from grounding (deferred squawk): the aircraft was already flying under the deferral, so nothing changes for bookings. Only a grounding squawk can be deferred, so the deferral no longer applies: the squawk becomes open at its new severity and its deferral date is cleared. The deferral’s reason stays on the squawk.
  • Raised to grounding (open squawk): the aircraft is grounded at once and members’ future bookings on it suspend, exactly as when a grounding squawk is reported. Members get the Grounded notification.
  • Changed on a pending squawk: nothing happens to the aircraft until the squawk is confirmed. It is then confirmed at the new severity.

The squawk’s detail screen now shows the change to everyone who can open it, including the member who reported it: Severity changed from the old severity to the new one by your name on the date and time, with Reason: underneath if you gave one. Only the most recent change is shown.

  • “Give the reason for lowering a squawk that grounded the aircraft.”: you lowered an open or deferred grounding squawk without a reason. Type one and tap Save severity again.
  • “Couldn’t change the severity”: nothing has changed. Check your connection and try again. If it keeps failing, reopen the squawk: another admin may have resolved it in the meantime.
  • No Change severity button: the squawk is resolved or dismissed, or you are not an admin of this syndicate.
